From Colorado Pine to incredibly rare exotics from every corner of the world, the possibilities seem endless. As a young woodworker and machinist, hand picking 150-year-old Oak Timbers and machining them down to help create an Alter for Pope John Paul II to speak from at his Living History Farms visit when I was 20 years old to picking out an Exotic Rosewood Block yesterday at 60+ to create a new puzzle, my fascination with wood varieties, uniqueness and beauty has never diminished. Even my design has changed and evolved a number of times over the 40 years that have passed since first seeing a cardboard / cellophane variation of this puzzle and deciding to create a more beautiful and functional puzzle by designing my own out of wood and covered in clear acrylic to end up with the current one affectionately tagged "Shake... Rattle... Roll... ??".
Here I have designed a Tribute Puzzle to the people of Ukraine by creating a piece using an Exotic Wood species known as Purpleheart (Peltogyne Paniculata) found in South America and combined it with marbles as close to the color of their Nations Flag as I could find. This wood is Brown when first cut and turns a Deeper Purple the more it is Exposed to the Sun (UV Rays). This is the only Puzzle currently being made that does not have a coat of Danish Oil Hand Rubbed onto the wood. Because of the ever-present change to the color of the wood, it is Finished with the "Mirrored Woods" Process and Protected with Paste Wax, only, to allow Continual Darkening with Exposure to Sunlight.
As mentioned, these Puzzles are also an Excellent Choice for Education and young people really have a fun time trying to solve the Puzzle, while also learning some valuable Science Lessons in the Process. Do you know of a Classroom, School or Learning Facility that could benefit from having a "SHAKE... RATTLE... ROLL... ??" Puzzle or two?
Some of my own favorite woods are shown on this site and I would be delighted to create a Custom Puzzle for you using your most beloved types of wood and/or colors of Marbles.
Whether you choose an Original Pine Puzzle that has Dark Blue Glass Marbles, an already created Hardwood or Exotic Wood Puzzle with varying colors and types of Glass Marbles or even choose to create an entirely Custom-Made Puzzle with all your own choices, these Puzzles make excellent gifts for almost anybody. (Recommended Age is 6 years and above). All "Shake... Rattle... Roll... ??" Puzzles have an ~MJR~ Woodworks LLC Logo burnt into the bottom of the wood body. Some Logos are easily seen and legible while others may be very difficult to even visualize due to wood-burning variations from hardness of the wood, color of wood, type of wood, surface grain type and other factors, but it's there if it's one of my creations. Puzzles are 100% Individually Hand Built from solid or laminated wood blocks, making each and every one is truly unique. *Some pictures may only show wood appearance details for visual purposes and not actual finished puzzles*
A Full Display of Finished Puzzles can be seen and Purchased at the Coal Creek ACE Hardware Store in Louisville, CO. located at 1343 E South Boulder Road Display is in the Center of Store at the Service Hub. A sample puzzle is on the counter to test your skills :)

Wood can be Plain and boring, or be Incredibly Colorful and Intricately Detailed. Many of the Wooden Blocks that I create my Puzzles from are Hand Picked or Formed Pieces like the 2nd one down in this Picture. Three 1/2" pieces were laminated together to make this Unique Figured Ash Puzzle, Do you have a piece of Wood that you would like a Puzzle made from? i would be happy to discuss this.
